Trip back

The biking trip ends in Paris. You will go back on Sunday evening (after the climate march) by bus to Brussels. Your bike will be transported by bike trailer. If you like biking back yourself, we will gladly pay back your registration fee.

Departure and arrival in Brussels

For most people, the biking trip starts and ends in Brussels. Do you want to go to Brussels by bike? Send an email to roadtoparis@climate-express.eu and we will put you in touch with other enthusiasts.

CO2 compensation

The bikers will be brought back by bus, the bikes will be returned with a special kind of trailer. These emissions will be compensated by planting trees on local soil. The newly planted forest will compensate the emitted amount of CO2 in a period of 5 years. For more information and a module to calculate your CO2-emissions www.treecological.be

Insurance

There is no additional insurance for the biking ride. Most bikers already have either an insurance policy with their health fund (personal accidents) or a household insurance (for third parties). When in doubt, be sure to check with your insurance agent.

On the way

Food and drinks

You will get breakfast and a warm evening meal at the sleeping accommodation. Lunch will be served on the way. For these meals, we cooperate with the contemporary caterer Just Like Your Mom. They transform local vegetables into delicious vegan plates.

Sleeping accommodation

To be in top condition during the day, Climate Express provides comfortable sleeping accommodation on the way to Paris. There will be a warm dorm for each night in a school or a sports hall. Showers and clean toilets will also be assured. Everyone should bring their own sleeping mat and sleeping bag though.

Luggage

Your luggage will be transported to the sleeping accommodation. It is best to make a distinction between a limited amount of biking luggage and your remaining luggage (At most, 2 pieces, in total maximum 20 kg).

Activities

To take a break in the evening after the biking trip, there will be relaxing activities, such as workshops, presentations and interactive activities, also by bike. Do you have an idea yourself? Send us an email: contact@climate-express.be.

EHBO

For smaller accidents during the trip, there will be biking healers (each equipped with a first aid kit). There will also be a doctor doing the trip by car as to provide aid with possible worse accidents.

Repairs

For simple repairs on the way you can ask our biking repairmen. For bigger repairs, there will be a well-equipped minivan.

Type of bike

“Bike it on” is also a trip of alternatives, such as a tandem, a carrier cycle, a reclicing bycicle or an electric bycicle. All are very welcome.

Speed

We won’t bike in group, except for when we leave the cities. Everyone can choose his own pace and decides for his own when he or she arrives at the sleeping accommodation.

Signposting

The entire track will be signposted. A few weeks before departure you will also receive a GPX-file.

Joining in later

If you join in later during the bike trip (Bergen or later), you should let us know the expected time and location by sending us an email: roadtoparis@climate-express.eu.

In Paris

Sleeping accommodation

Once we arrive in Paris, we will stay overnight in the beautiful youth hostel Yves Robert. This means that everyone can rest and recuperate from the bike ride and get ready for the Climate March.

Metro

Wor those that want to, in Paris it is possible to transfer onto the Paris metro. This ticket will be offered to you en route. As yet, it is not sure if this ticket will be included in the fee.

Activities

As the cyclists only arrive in Paris on Saturday, the emphasis is on the Climate March on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday morning there are some small fringe activities taking place. MORE INFO

Overview of the current initiatives

GroenPlus hikes

GroenPlus are 20 brave walkers (including a woman 79-years-young!) heading to Paris. With their start on 11 November they are the first Belgians who are setting off for the French capital. Cheer them along during the first etappe to Halle. They are planning to depart at 10am in front of the European Parliament on the Luxemburgplein. By walking an average of 25 kilometers a day they wil arrive on 27 November, so they can form a welcome committee for everyone else!

I am doing it my way

Are you going to Paris in an alternative way and you still want to join Climate Express during the March? Send an email to (owninitiative@climate-express.be) . This way you and your friends will be the first to be informed about where and when Climate Express will join together in Paris.

GroenPlus bikes

On 23 November a delegation from GroenPlus will leave on bikes, armed with altimeters. On Friday 27 November, having cycled around 390 kilometers, they will reach Paris. The day after, they will cycle in the French capital with Climate Express cyclists.

The Climate Run

Our impact on nature is a question of balance, unfortunately our planet is about to topple over for the worst. We are the generation that can lighten the load. To inspire others to do the same and demonstrate it takes effort to accomplish a goal, we are running to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris. Let us make sure hard effort is put into achieving the result we all want: A balanced earth. This November in Paris, we run towards a sustainable future. Are you with us? Details: Running from Brussels to Paris in the last week of November (23/11-28/11/2015) on a yet to be determined route (+-350km). You can join at any time during the run by carpooling/taking the train or bus to a given point on the route. Saturday we will organize a shorter distance run ending in Paris. Sunday we will join the massive climate march for a strong global climate agreement. Interested? (nelson.coomans@gmail.com).

The Fast Lane

I will cycle from Ghent to Paris in two days, and from Paris to Ghent in one day. For the return journey from Paris to Belgium you can also book a seat on the Climate Express coaches (until 30th October). On Friday I will cycle from Ghent to Compiègne (around 240 km) - leave around 6am, with a predicted arrival around 12 hours later. You can also join me/us in Doornik (reachable by train), which makes the journey 60 km shorter. On Saturday I will cycle from Compiègne to Paris (90 km) and head to the Parc de La Villette where the bike caravan from Climate Express will come together. In Paris I will be staying in hostel le d’Artagnan. On Saturday evening I will join the evening programme from the bike caravan. I will not be followed by a support team or catering team - there are enough bakers in France, no? I will keep luggage to a minimum and take what I have with me on my (racing)bike. Would you like to cycle with me? Contact: Toby Lauwerier: tobylauwerier@hotmail.com

Short bike ride (version B)

Also from Mechelen-Leuven there will be a 2-day ride to Paris (and back). On day 1 we will cycle to Compiègne, joining the peloton from Ghent as soon as possible en route (see: “Short bike ride”). Estimated distance of about 260 km and 1300hm. Day 2: Compiègne – Paris (90 km) with overnight stay in the Hostel le d’Artagnan. After the climate march we will cycle and take the train back home on Monday. Contact: Hans Vankerckhoven: hansvankerckhoven@yahoo.com

Hitchhiking

With Climate express, it is already possible to go by train, coach and bike. So why not by hitch-hiking? Irfan and I are leaving on Saturday 28-11-2015 from Hasselt and are hitch-hiking. Would you like to join us? Then let us know asap! If we get enough people together, we can organise a race. It is high time for a change, hopefully as quickly as possible. We are already wondering who will be the first to get in Paris! You can reach us via: sanne.vanherle@gmail.com and irfan.oztas@gmail.com.

Let's kayak to Paris!

The crisis of water that humanity will be subjected to in the coming decades is closely linked to climate change. If we keep doing what we are doing, we will see more and more problems such as these: drought, floods, melting polar ice, poor water quality, lack of access to water, rising sea levels…and all the consequences that this will have on all living beings, including humans. Another world is possible but we must do something now before it is too late. We must put pressure on politicians from across the globe. Richard, Manu, Jean and Jean-Pierre are going to Paris to take the suggestions and expectations of citizens and NGOs about all our futures to the politicians. This a symbolic trip of more than 400km on water, finishing at the big climate march. The departure is planned for Saturday 21st November, and with an average of 60 kilometres a day, we will arrive just in time to join thousands of others who have come to Paris for the big demo. contact : richard.mardens@gmail.com

By bike: Copenhagen – Paris (5/12)

Cooperide is another bike ride going to Paris for the climate negotiations. The Cooperide is a symbolic and physical journey from the frustration of the climate negotiations 2009 in Copenhagen to the expectation of the new attempt in Paris. The ride starts on the 14th November in Copenhagen, will be in Brussels for the Climate March on the 29th November, and will reach Paris on the 5th December for a week full of activism around the COP21. Find more information on our website http://cooperide.org/ and join us in the ride to Paris!

The Climate Miles

The Dutch organisation Climate Miles will start walking from Utrecht to Paris at the beginniing of November. They will go across Belgium and invite any interested walkers to join them. You can stay in their overnight accommodation and have meals with them. Either you can join them for one day, for several days or for the entire journey. Look at the whole route and sign up via their website:www.theclimatemiles.nl/route.
